Previous Projects

The Legacy Project is part of the new Washington State Heritage Center proposed by Secretary of State Sam Reed. The Project is planning to release its third book with the biography and oral history of Mrs. Lillian Walker. At 96 years old, Lillian Walker’s lifelong commitment to civil rights continues.
The 300 page book includes one-of-a-kind photos, and first person stories of Mrs. Walker’s life. What emerges is a compelling portrait of a woman who has been “educating people”, as she put it, about racial equality for as long as she can remember.
The printing of the book will be financed by gifts to the Washington State Heritage Center Trust. The goal is to raise $6,000 to finance the printing of 500 high-quality softbound books. On April 21, 2010, the YWCA Board of Directors pledged $3,000 towards the publication of Mrs. Walker’s biography. The YWCA is currently seeking $3,000 in matching funds from Kitsap County community members, organizations, and churches. We hope to accomplish this goal no later that July 1, 2010.
We would appreciate any contribution that you can make towards making this extraordinary project a reality. All donors of $50 or more will receive a copy of the book and an invitation to the book launch. Copies of the book will be given free of charge to libraries across the State. Gifts to support the publication of the book may be made online at www.heritagecenter.wa.gov (click on the Donate button) or mailed to:
